As the prime mission neared its end, Juno continued to buzz its largest moon Ganymede and made several fascinating new discoveries about Jupiter’s auroras, polar cyclones, and even some of its more mysterious regions. This data was used to help scientists plan future space missions to the Jovian system, including NASA’s Europa Clipper and ESA’s JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE).
In August 2021, Juno began an extended mission that will include 42 additional orbits of Jupiter. These orbits will be used to expand on Juno’s science campaigns and further investigate the planet’s interior structure, internal magnetic field, atmosphere and magnetosphere.
